Leva e Traz
A circulação de pessoas, mercadorias, capital, etc., informa minha pesquisa, assim como minha condição de imigrante brasileiro no exterior. O projeto Leva e Traz localiza-se nesse trânsito, tendo como eixo o SAARA, polo de comércio popular no centro do Rio de Janeiro e bairro onde moro. É nesse território de hipermercantilização contemporânea que operam os carregadores e transportadores informais, cujos fluxos diários sustentam a engrenagem da circulação de bens na cidade.
Eduardo Galeano, em As Veias Abertas da América Latina, pinta um cenário histórico onde a exploração colonial se perpetua na transformação de recursos naturais em sucata. Foi pensando na transformação desses materiais e nos perímetros de seus vaivéns que criei esses trabalhos. Os transportadores do SAARA são a penúltima fase dessa rota, de um depósito a uma loja antes que a mercadoria seja vendida.
Leva e Traz atua como um levantamento desse espaço ao juntar fotografias de trabalhadores feitas perto do Centro Municipal de Arte Hélio Oiticica com objetos transportados por eles e comprados no SAARA. Eu chamo essas obras de "quase-não-mercadoria", na medida em que sua função original é suspensa sem que sua origem comercial seja negada.

Back and Forth (Leva e Traz)
The circulation of people, goods, capital, and more informs my research, as well as my condition as a Brazilian immigrant living abroad. The project Back and Forth is situated within this transit, centering on SAARA, a major hub for popular commerce in downtown Rio de Janeiro and the neighborhood where I live. It is within this territory of contemporary hyper-commodification that informal porters and transport workers operate, whose daily flows sustain the machinery of goods circulation in the city.
Eduardo Galeano, in Open Veins of Latin America, paints a historical landscape where colonial exploitation perpetuates itself through the transformation of natural resources into scrap. It was by reflecting on the transformation of these materials and the perimeters of their comings and goings that I created these works. The transporters of SAARA represent the penultimate phase of this route, moving goods from a warehouse to a shop before they are sold.
Back and Forth acts as a survey of this space by bringing together photographs of workers taken near the Hélio Oiticica Municipal Art Center alongside objects transported by them and purchased in SAARA. I call these works "quasi-commodities," in the sense that their original function is suspended without denying their commercial origin.
